Picking a live chat platform in 2026 is harder than it should be. The market has more options than ever and almost every vendor claims AI features, GDPR compliance, and unlimited everything. Here's a practical comparison of the platforms small UK businesses actually shortlist.

The four main options

Intercom

The premium incumbent. Best-in-class product, deep integrations, and an AI bot ("Fin") that's genuinely good. The catch is price — Intercom has historically been priced for venture-backed B2B SaaS, not for a 4-person UK business. If budget isn't a constraint and your team will use the platform every day, Intercom is hard to beat.

Tidio

Lighter than Intercom, much cheaper, popular with e-commerce. The free tier is real and the Shopify integration is solid. The AI bot is decent but the knowledge base feels less mature than the chat side. Good fit for D2C brands on a budget.

Zendesk

The veteran ticketing system that added chat and now AI on top. Best if you already use Zendesk for tickets and want everything in one place. Overkill for a small team that just wants chat.

Free, forever. Genuinely free, no trial. The trade-off is that the chat UX is dated, the AI is rudimentary, and "free" means your data lives in their cloud on their terms. Fine for a side project; not ideal for a business that handles personal data.

  3. **Will the bot use my knowledge base, or just canned replies?** This is the biggest UX gap between modern and legacy tools.
  4. **Can I get a DPA without upgrading to enterprise?** You shouldn't have to.
  5. **Does the WhatsApp integration share a knowledge base with the website widget?** Otherwise you're running two bots.
  6. **What does the bill look like at 10× current volume?** Some platforms get nasty as you grow.
